Description

The YDS Patrol Public Order Boot is a flame retardant public order boot built for officers deployed into crowd control, riot and disorder situations. It is made from thick flame-retardant full grain leather, fitted with steel toe caps and flexible midsole protection, and certified to BS 7971-5: 2016, the British Standard for protective footwear for police and prison public order use.

Manufactured by YDS and supplied by Chiltern Global, a UK supplier of specialist police, prison, military and security equipment founded by a former police officer.

Key features:

  • Proven to be a safe casing for hostile crowd control and dangerous terrain
  • Certified to BS 7971-5: 2016, the public order footwear standard
  • Thick flame-retardant full grain leather upper
  • Steel toe caps and flexible midsole protection
  • DDR injected sole system giving 300°C heat resistance through the rubber outsole and air injected rubber midsole
  • Downwards facing seams so petrol runs off the boot rather than into it
  • Cut resistant strip behind the leather
  • Fire-retardant laces and stitching
  • Ankle guard built in
  • Optional intelligent D3O® metatarsal protection

Designed around petrol bomb and missile attack

Public order footwear has a different job to standard patrol footwear. An officer holding a cordon is standing still, in the open, with things being thrown at them and burning liquid running across the ground. The YDS control public order boot answers that with a DDR injected sole system, providing 300°C heat resistance through the rubber outsole and air injected rubber midsole, and with seams that face downwards so petrol runs off the boot instead of tracking into the stitching. The upper is thick flame-retardant full grain leather with a cut resistant strip, and the laces and stitching are fire-retardant so the boot does not come apart at the point it is needed most.

Underfoot, toe and ankle protection

Steel toe caps and flexible midsole protection guard against crushing and against standing on debris, broken glass and nails, which is a routine hazard on ground that has already been fought over, and on the dangerous terrain officers are often deployed onto. A built-in ankle guard adds protection to one of the most exposed parts of the foot when officers are working shoulder to shoulder behind shields. For units that want the top of the foot covered as well, the boot can be specified with optional intelligent D3O® metatarsal protection, a material that stays flexible in normal wear and stiffens on impact. Chiltern Global also supplies a separate strap-on Metatarsal Guard that threads under the boot lacing, if you prefer to add that protection to boots already in service.

What BS 7971-5: 2016 actually means

BS 7971 is the British Standard series for protective clothing and equipment for use in violent situations and in training. Part 5 covers footwear. A boot certified to it has been assessed as suitable for public order and control and restraint duties, rather than simply being a work boot that happens to be black. If you are writing a specification, running a tender or replacing kit against a force standard, this is usually the clause that matters, and it is the reason a general purpose patrol boot will not pass.

Who these boots are for

  • Police Support Units (PSU) and public order officers deployed to protests, football fixtures and public disorder
  • Prison staff and control and restraint (C&R) teams needing certified footwear for training and for incidents
  • Prisoner escort and custody teams working in environments where fire and sharps are a live risk
  • Military provost, guard force and internal security units with a crowd control role
  • Security and event teams working large crowds where standard safety boots are not enough
  • Training centres equipping instructors and students for petrol bomb and public order training.

Frequently asked questions

What is a public order boot?

A public order boot is footwear built for officers policing riots, protests and violent disorder. It is designed around fire, petrol, thrown missiles and debris underfoot rather than around general workplace hazards, and in the UK it is normally certified to BS 7971-5. A standard safety or patrol boot is not a substitute.

Do these come in a ladies fit?

Yes. YDS lists this boot in a ladies range of UK 3 to 8 alongside the mens range of UK 4 to 15. Sizes are available to order, so if they are not showing as available to buy on this page, use the Request a Quote form and tell us the sizes you need.

My size is not showing as available. Can I still get it?

Yes. Sizes in both ranges can be ordered even when they are not showing in stock on this page. Use the Request a Quote form, tell us the range and sizes, and we will come back to you.

Are these the same as YDS army patrol boots?

No. YDS makes several boots and the word patrol appears on more than one of them. The brown YDS Kestrel and Falcon boots are military patrol boots. This is the YDS control public order boot, a black leather riot boot certified to BS 7971-5: 2016, and it is a different product for a different job.

Do they have steel toe caps?

Yes. The boot has steel toe caps together with flexible midsole protection.

Are they fire resistant?

The upper is thick flame-retardant full grain leather, the laces and stitching are fire-retardant, and the DDR injected sole system provides 300°C heat resistance through the rubber outsole and air injected rubber midsole. The seams face downwards so petrol runs off the boot.

Can I buy these if I am not a serving officer?

Yes. These boots are not restricted equipment and can be bought directly from this page. Chiltern Global also supplies police forces, prison establishments, military and security organisations in volume.

Do you supply these in bulk to forces and establishments?

Yes. For volume pricing, framework purchasing, a bespoke specification, full unit size runs or test certificates, use the Request a Quote form on this page or contact us.
